Act 4

Important

.. I recommend following this skill tree path which was explicitly designed to make the gaming experience as pleasant as possible for new players. That being said, it focuses more on survivability and comfort than damage, but the guide will elaborate on options to adjust the skill tree in order to be more damage centric later.

Level 34
Important

Resistances affect the amount of damage taken of specific damage types. By default, you can get a maximum of 75% resistances. For now, you should focus on capping Fire Resistance, Cold Resistance and Lightning Resistance. Not capping elemental resistances is without a doubt the most common reason why new players struggle to progress through the campaign.

You can use the Crafting Bench in your hideout to add elemental resistances to your items. Whether or not you can craft elemental resistances on an item depends on several things, but to go into that at this point would be an overload of information. So for now, just put an item into the crafting bench and check if you can craft additional elemental resistances on it.

If you want to know more about crafting now, check out this video guide by Zizaran.

Level 34
Important

At this point of the game, you will face strong enemies who might deal a lot of damage in a very short period of time. To prevent you from dying from multiple strong hits, you want to have a life flask which immediately restores some of your health. You can get this by having the following modifier on your life flask: ‚Instant Recovery‘ (this modifer always comes along with ‚#% recuded amount recovered‘ which basically is a tradeoff). For now, there are 3 ways to get this modifier:

  1. Loot and identify a magic life flask and hope it has the specific modifier (uncommon).
  2. Use an Orb of Transmutation on a normal flask to make it magic and hope it gets the specific modifier (uncommon).
  3. Use Orbs of Alteration on a magic flask to change the modifiers until you hit the desired modifier (the outcome is still heavily rng-based, but it’s the most reliable way to get this modifier). Important: Only use these methods on flasks with an itemlevel of 7 or higher (you can see the itemlevel by pressing ALT when you mouse over the item).
Level 34
Important

At this point of the game, you will face enemies who apply a bleeding debuff (which is an ailment) which deals physical damage over time to you. In order to remove this ailment, you have to use a flask which has the modifier ‚Grants Immunity to Bleeding for X seconds if used while bleeding‘.

Level 38
Important

You can buy (G) Withering Touch Support from Petarus and Vanja in Highgate after completing the quest The Eternal Nightmare.

Level 38
Important

You can buy (R) Multiple Totems Support from Petarus and Vanja in Highgate after completing the quest The Eternal Nightmare.

Level 38
Important

Your Ballista Totem Support setup now should look like this from here on as soon as possible (gems listed in order of importance):

Note: As soon as you use Multiple Totems Support, you can summon more than two totems in total, but using the skill will still only summon two of them. Therefore, you now have to press the skill multiple times to get the most out of it. The total amount of totems you can summon depends on the level of the gem while the maximum amount with this build is 5.

Level 43
Important

You can buy (R) Determination from Clarissa in The Sarn Encampment in Act 3 after completing the quest Lost in Love.

Determination is an aura, so you have to activate it once. Use it as soon as possible BUT ONLY if you already have picked the following nodes on the skill tree …

  •  ‘Charisma’ and
  • Herbalism‚ and
  • Life Mastery (Vitality has 100% increased Mana Reservation Efficiency) next to ‚Herbalism

… AND if you have an Enduring Mana Flask (Reminder: ‚Enduring Mana Flask‘ means that the flask has the modifier ‚Flask effect is not removed when Unreserved Mana is Filled‘). Otherwise level the gem until you fulfill both requirements. The reason: If you use Determination without fulfilling mentioned requirements, you will suffer a lot from not having mana to use skills!

Note: If you need strength to use (R) Determination don’t hesitate to pick up the ‚Prowess‚ node on the skill tree.

Also note: If you don’t have enough mana to use your skills after you’ve activated all three auras (Malevolence, Determination and Vitality), don’t hesitate to not use Vitality. If you do so, it’s recommened to not use (G) Blood Rage for the time being (since it’s not that crucial). Additionally (if you choose to not use Vitality), you can choose (R) Stone Golem as a quest reward after completing the quest ‚Breaking the Seal‚ in Act 4 and use it instead of Vitality for the time being.

Level 43
Important

You can buy (R) Molten Shell from Nessa in Lioneye’s Watch after completing the quest Breaking Some Eggs (check the next task to see what to do with Molten Shell)

Note: There is an alternate version of Molten Shell called Vaal Molten Shell which you can’t buy at a vendor, but it can drop from enemies (e.g. in Vaal Side Areas). If you are lucky to get one, use it. Frankly speaking, you get two versions of the skill by using this gem. You want to set the normal version as your default left click (to autocast it) and you want to use the Vaal version manually when you are in danger. More information regarding Vaal Skills can be found here.

Level 43
Important

Additionally, make sure to set (R) Molten Shell as your default left click (to autocast it). If you don’t use (R) Determination yet, store (R) Molten Shell in your stash or level it in your second weapon set.

Level 43
Important

This is optional, but adds an additional defensive layer since Granite Flasks provide additional armour [which scales with (R) Determination]. You can choose a Granite Flask as a quest reward for completing the quest The Key to Freedom later in Act 5 , but it can also drop from enemies earlier.
